Hear from Third Street Parents
Sara
I grew up in the neighborhood, and I started coming to Third Street when I was five or six years old. For years, I took piano and guitar lessons, and I was always here. It was my second home.
As a parent now, I understand it's important to study music because it changes how you think, it changes how you can process. But there are also behavioral benefits to it. You have to become disciplined in how you practice, you have to create the time for it.
I love being a Third Street parent for the same reasons as I loved being a Third Street student—it's a second home. It really is a second place to be.
Whenever we walk by on a Saturday or after hours, Jess, my daughter, wants to go to the courtyard. She wants to go inside and see what's around. It's not just a place to spend a few hours each day. It's a place to be—and to be happy.

I came to Third Street when I was two years old. I’m actually still friends with two friends I met in preschool. One of my son’s teachers, Mik, was the music and movement teacher for me too.

When we were picking our son’s school, we looked at a bunch of places. But when we came to Third Street, I just felt that all the incredible things I remembered hadn’t changed at all—the teachers and the staff are great, and the music is wonderful. The kids do music every single day, it seems like. And my son loves music, so it was just a perfect fit.

The preschool is a very special place because they do a child-led and centered curriculum so well. I previously taught at Montessori schools, and other play-based schools, and this is a very unique environment where they're very attuned to the needs and interests of the children. It’s very, very special to have someone engage with your child and see what they want to be learning. It's such a unique time in their life where they don't have to be learning rote math and reading and writing.

As a parent and alumni of Third Street, I've obviously always been very drawn to the community here, and it's a lovely group of teachers, so I was very excited to join the ranks with the rest of the amazing staff.

Third Street is a safe, encouraging space for young people—people of all ages—to embrace their creativity and musicality. And it's a really important space for the community because it has consistently offered accessibility to these lessons and this education.
I came here from around 2001 to 2006—for after-school lessons, taking guitar and some piano. I met so many great friends here. We played a lot of classic rock, and the teacher would actually have us bring in songs that we were feeling or discovering at the time, and we will learn those songs.

We decided to send our son here, first off, out of familiarity and trust. When we were first pregnant, we always foresaw that it'd be great to send them here. And he loves music. Even from a young age, he's always been very attracted to that. So we are very happy that that is really part of the core curriculum here.
