THE PROGRAM
Threes arrive at Third Street each day and enter their classroom spaces ready to begin their day. As their independence increases, they are proud of the self-help skills they are mastering, like learning how to take their coats off, hang them in their cubby spaces, and make choices around where they begin their day. Will it be the Sensory Table? Dramatic Play? Block Building? The Writing Area? The Science Center?
Morning meetings include conversations where children are encouraged to share important information with friends and teachers. Pre-reading and math skills are thoughtfully introduced in fun ways through charts and graphs that the children create with their teachers. Which is your favorite color apple? Green? Red? Yellow? Our learners hypothesize, experiment, explore, predict and evaluate their experiences.
Friendships are solidified and children learn about their social worlds while creating play schemas that represent the world outside of the classroom. Each day, we meet dragons who breathe fire, firefighters run in to save the day, ‘grown-ups’ caring for their babies in the dramatic play area, mermaids, and much more!
In addition to the daily classroom activities, included in the Three’s days at school are daily outdoor play time, regular Learning Garden time, twice-weekly music and movement classes, led by Third Street Music School Specialists, and once-weekly art class, led by the Art Specialist. Our Specials are all designed to compliment the learning that is taking place in the classroom. Beginning at about 3.5, our students are invited to join the PIP (Preschool Instrument Program) Program, where, after selecting the instrument that they wish to learn, a Music School music teacher comes to the classroom once a week, takes the student to a studio space for a private ½ hour lesson, and then returns the child to their class.
Threes work both collaboratively, independently and with their teachers; exploring classroom materials, outdoor adventures, and the arts, while they simultaneously grow in all areas of development: Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Language and Physical.
